چکیده

— Underwater acoustic networks are envisaged to be the enabling technology for oceanographic data collection, pollution monitoring, offshore exploration and tactical surveillance applications. Unique characteristics of underwater acoustic channels such as large propagation delays and high bit error rates pose a challenge to designing reliable and ef cient communication protocols. In this paper, we propose an opportunistic acknowledgement scheme suited for Stop and Wait ARQ protocols and demonstrate using simulations that it achieves better latency and energy ef ciency than traditional non-opportunistic schemes for both one and two-dimensional multi-hop acoustic channels.

Cascading Multi-Hop Reservation and Transmission in Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks

The long propagation delay in an underwater acoustic channel makes designing an underwater media access control (MAC) protocol more challenging. In particular, handshaking-based MAC protocols widely used in terrestrial radio channels have been known to be inappropriate in underwater acoustic channels, because of the inordinately large latency involved in exchanging control packets. Furthermore,...

AURP: An AUV-Aided Underwater Routing Protocol for Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks

Deploying a multi-hop underwater acoustic sensor network (UASN) in a large area brings about new challenges in reliable data transmissions and survivability of network due to the limited underwater communication range/bandwidth and the limited energy of underwater sensor nodes. In order to address those challenges and achieve the objectives of maximization of data delivery ratio and minimizatio...

Throughput and Energy Efficiency of a Cooperative Hybrid ARQ Protocol for Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks

Due to its efficiency, reliability and better channel and resource utilization, cooperative transmission technologies have been attractive options in underwater as well as terrestrial sensor networks. Their performance can be further improved if merged with forward error correction (FEC) techniques. In this paper, we propose and analyze a retransmission protocol named Cooperative-Hybrid Automat...

Evaluating Selective ARQ and Slotted Handshake Based Access in Real World Underwater Networks

Medium Access Control (MAC) is an essential component of protocol stacks in Underwater Acoustic Networks (UANs). Numerous dedicated UAN MAC protocols have been proposed and studied via analysis and simulations. However, limited work has been done on evaluating these protocols in real ocean environments. To achieve a better understanding on how MAC protocols perform in real world UANs, we implem...

SDRT: A reliable data transport protocol for underwater sensor networks

In this paper, we investigate the reliable data transport problem in underwater sensor networks. Underwater sensor networks are significantly different from terrestrial sensor networks in two aspects: acoustic channels are used for communication and most sensor nodes are mobile due to water current. These distinctions feature underwater sensor networks with low available bandwidth, large propag...
